Il Monte Athos \u00e8 la terza penisola di Halkidiki e non solo costituisce un sito del patrimonio mondiale, ma rende anche un&#8217;entit\u00e0 autonoma nella Repubblica ellenica. Athos ospita 20 monasteri ortodossi orientali sotto la diretta giurisdizione del patriarca di Costantinopoli. Il Monte Athos \u00e8 stato abitato fin dall&#8217;antichit\u00e0 ed \u00e8 noto per la sua continua presenza cristiana di quasi 1.800 anni e le sue lunghe tradizioni monastiche storiche, che risalgono almeno all&#8217;800 d.C. e all&#8217;era bizantina. Oggi, oltre 2.000 monaci provenienti dalla Grecia e da molti altri paesi ortodossi orientali, come Bulgaria, Serbia e Russia, vivono una vita ascetica ad Athos, isolata dal resto del mondo.
