Le mont Athos est la troisi\u00e8me p\u00e9ninsule de Halkidiki et il ne constitue pas seulement un site du patrimoine mondial, mais il rend \u00e9galement une entit\u00e9 autonome dans la R\u00e9publique hell\u00e9nique. Athos abrite 20 monast\u00e8res orthodoxes orientaux sous la juridiction directe du patriarche de Constantinople. Le mont Athos est habit\u00e9 depuis l&rsquo;Antiquit\u00e9 et il est connu pour sa pr\u00e9sence chr\u00e9tienne continue de pr\u00e8s de 1800 ans et ses longues traditions monastiques historiques, qui remontent \u00e0 au moins 800 apr\u00e8s JC et \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9poque byzantine.
