Das moderne Dorf hei\u00dft Nea Olynthos und liegt am Fu\u00dfe der Halbinsel Kassandra, 78 km von Thessaloniki und 12 km von Potidea entfernt. New Olynthos ist die Fortsetzung des byzantinischen Dorfes Myriophytos. Nach 1922 kamen viele Fl\u00fcchtlinge aus Ostthrakien und Kleinasien zu den wenigen Anwohnern hinzu. Heutzutage leben hier etwa 1200 Einwohner, die haupts\u00e4chlich in der Landwirtschaft und im Olivenanbau besch\u00e4ftigt sind.<br \/>\nIm Osten der neuen Siedlung, nicht weit entfernt, befinden sich die Ruinen des ber\u00fchmten alten Olynthos. Die Stadt ist seit der Jungsteinzeit (5300-4500 v. Chr.) bewohnt, w\u00e4hrend das Wort &#8222;Olynthos&#8220; vorhellenisch ist und wahrscheinlich die Bedeutung &#8222;wilde Feige&#8220; hat. Nach der \u00dcberlieferung wurde es von Olynthos, dem Sohn des Flusses God Strymon, so benannt. Das alte Olynthos wurde auf zwei H\u00fcgeln gebaut, dem s\u00fcdlichen und dem n\u00f6rdlichen. Der s\u00fcdliche H\u00fcgel wurde von der Stadt besetzt, die laut Herodot im 7. Jahrhundert von den Voctianern von Imathia gegr\u00fcndet wurde. Diese Stadt wurde 479 v. Chr. von den Persern von Artabazos zerst\u00f6rt. Die Bewohner verlie\u00dfen das Gebiet jedoch nicht. Sie bauten eine neue Stadt auf dem n\u00f6rdlichen H\u00fcgel. Es war das Olynthos der Klassik, erbaut im hippodamischen Stadtplanungssystem, mit Bausteinen, die durch horizontale und vertikale Stra\u00dfen getrennt waren. Die Genauigkeit des Stadtplans von Olynthos hilft uns zu verstehen, wie das Hippodamio-Stadtplanungssystem angewendet wurde. Es sollte eine wichtige Rolle spielen und vom 5. bis 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. das wichtigste politische, wirtschaftliche und milit\u00e4rische Zentrum Chalkidikis werden. Dar\u00fcber hinaus bedeutete die Gr\u00fcndung des Halkidian Gemeindelandes  im Jahr 430 v. Chr. die politische Vereinigung von 32 St\u00e4dten Chalkidikis unter dem Kommando von Olynthos. Der gro\u00dfe Wohlstand der Stadt brachte sie in Konflikt mit K\u00f6nig Philipp II. von Mazedonien, der die Anwesenheit einer anderen gro\u00dfen Streitmacht in seiner Region nicht tolerieren konnte und schlie\u00dflich 348 v. Chr. zu ihrer Zerst\u00f6rung f\u00fchrte. Heute wurde ein gro\u00dfer Teil der antiken Stadt an der Ausgrabungsst\u00e4tte entdeckt, und es wurden Gr\u00e4ber, M\u00fcnzen und Mosaike von einzigartiger Sch\u00f6nheit gefunden, die aus verschiedenen Epochen der griechischen Geschichte stammen.<br \/>\nIn der arch\u00e4ologischen St\u00e4tte befindet sich ein Arch\u00e4ologisches Museum. Ausgrabungen werden nicht in den R\u00e4umlichkeiten ausgestellt, aber es steht audiovisuelles Material zur Verf\u00fcgung, mit dessen Hilfe der Besucher ein umfassenderes Bild der Geschichte des alten Olynthos erh\u00e4lt.
