Das wird beim Betreten der Petralona-H\u00f6hle, die vor rund einer Million Jahren entstanden ist, mehr als deutlich. Die H\u00f6hle, die wegen der Farbe, die die Bauxitvorkommen dem Gestein verleihen, auch &#8222;Rotsteinh\u00f6hle&#8220; genannt wird, erstreckt sich \u00fcber eine Fl\u00e4che von 10.400 m\u00b2 und besteht aus einer Reihe von Stollen, Kammern, hohen Decken und Becken voller Stalaktiten und Stalagmiten. Ihre Entdeckung im Jahr 1959 \u00f6ffnete ein Fenster in die pr\u00e4historische Zeit. Heute ist sie die bedeutendste der 12.000 H\u00f6hlen Griechenlands, dank ihres Reichtums an Fossilien (eine der reichsten Sammlungen Europas) und der Entdeckung der \u00e4ltesten menschlichen \u00dcberreste, die jemals in Griechenland gefunden wurden, vor etwa einem halben Jahrhundert. Die H\u00f6hle wird im Fr\u00fchjahr 2024 wiederer\u00f6ffnet, nachdem sie f\u00fcnf Jahre lang geschlossen war. In dieser Zeit wurde eine Reihe von Ma\u00dfnahmen durchgef\u00fchrt, um die H\u00f6hle sowohl f\u00fcr ihre Attraktionen als auch f\u00fcr ihre Besucher umweltvertr\u00e4glich zu gestalten.
