Der Berg Athos ist die dritte Halbinsel von Chalkidiki und stellt nicht nur eine Weltkulturerbe dar, sondern auch eine autonome Einheit in der Hellenischen Republik dar. In Athos befinden sich 20 ostorthodoxe Kl\u00f6ster unter der direkten Gerichtsbarkeit des Patriarchen von Konstantinopel. Der Berg Athos ist seit der Antike bewohnt und bekannt f\u00fcr seine fast 1.800 Jahre andauernde christliche Pr\u00e4senz und seine langen historischen Klostertraditionen, die mindestens 800 v. Chr. und die byzantinische Zeit zur\u00fcckreichen. Heute leben \u00fcber 2.000 M\u00f6nche aus Griechenland und vielen anderen ostorthodoxen L\u00e4ndern wie Bulgarien, Serbien und Russland ein asketisches Leben in Athos, isoliert vom Rest der Welt.
